St Lucia Birding Tours

Short walks, half-day outings and full-day birding for casual birders, ecotourists and serious twitchers.

Tailor-made where possible

Choose the pace that works for you.

Tours can use your own vehicle or a suitable guiding vehicle where required. Routes vary with weather, access, bird activity and your wish list.

A

2–3 hour guided birding walk

A good introduction for casual or beginner birders. The focus is on productive areas around St Lucia Village and nearby forest habitat, with possible targets including Livingstone's Turaco, Narina Trogon and Woodward's Batis.

B

Half-day tour · approximately 4 hours

Combine iGwalagwala Forest with the St Lucia estuary and other local wetland areas depending on conditions. This gives you a broader mix of forest, waterbird and open-habitat species.

Possible specials can include Green Twinspot, Livingstone's Turaco, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, terns, Mangrove Kingfisher in season and Southern Banded Snake Eagle.

C

Full-day birding and wildlife

Spend a full day exploring a wider range of habitats. Possible routes include the western shores, estuarine system, Mission Rocks, Mfabeni Swamp, Catalina Bay, Lake Bhangazi and Cape Vidal, depending on access and the day's priorities.

The full-day experience may combine target birding with broader wildlife viewing, including opportunities to see giraffe, buffalo, elephant, rhino and other mammals.
